Water Damage
Hurricane Season Water Damage Prevention Checklist for Florida Homes
By Clear Restoration · · 5 min read
Peak hurricane season in Florida runs through September and October. Wind-driven rain and flooding are the leading causes of storm water damage — and many of them are preventable.
Before the storm
A few hours of prep can prevent thousands in damage:
- Inspect your roof for loose or missing shingles and tiles
- Clear gutters and downspouts so water drains away from the foundation
- Check window and door seals; re-caulk gaps
- Install shutters or impact protection
- Move valuables and documents off the floor and into waterproof bins
- Photograph your home inside and out for insurance records
During the storm
Stay away from windows, keep towels ready at door thresholds and watch ceilings for stains or sagging — a sign water is pooling above.
After the storm
Walk the property once it's safe. Look for wet drywall, damp carpet, ceiling stains and water in the A/C closet. Storm water that enters from outside can be contaminated, so it should be extracted and the area sanitized — not just dried.
